Corneal Surgery Explained

Corneal surgery is a group of surgical procedures performed on the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped window at the front of the eye. The cornea is crucial in focusing light onto the retina, allowing us to see clearly. When the cornea is damaged or diseased, it can significantly impair vision.

Corneal Surgeries We Offer

Some corneal surgeries offered at ReFocus Eye Health include:

These surgeries involve replacing damaged or diseased corneal tissue with a healthy donor cornea. Penetrating keratoplasty involves replacing the entire thickness of the cornea, while endothelial keratoplasty selectively replaces the inner layer. These procedures effectively address conditions like corneal scarring, keratoconus, or corneal dystrophies.

This procedure is designed to strengthen the cornea, particularly in cases of progressive keratoconus. It involves applying riboflavin (vitamin B2) to the cornea and exposing it to ultraviolet light. This process enhances corneal rigidity, stabilizing the cornea and preventing further deformation.

Lens exchange refers to removing the eye's natural lens affected by cataracts or other conditions and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
