How Diabetes Can Affect Your Vision

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition characterized by elevated blood sugar levels resulting from the body’s inability to produce or effectively use insulin. Prolonged high blood sugar can lead to various complications, including diabetic retinopathy, which affects the eyes.

Regular eye examinations, early detection, and proactive diabetes management are crucial in preventing and minimizing the impact of diabetic retinopathy on vision.

Common Diabetes-Related Eye Issues

High blood sugar levels can damage the tiny blood vessels in the eyes, leading to various eye conditions, including:

This is the most common eye complication of diabetes and a leading cause of vision loss in adults. It occurs when the blood vessels in the retina become damaged. In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy may have no symptoms, but it can progress to cause vision problems.

This condition occurs when fluid leaks from the damaged blood vessels in the macula. It can cause blurred vision, distorted vision, and difficulty seeing fine details.
