  • Internal bleeding within the eye
  • Presence of foreign objects in the eye

  • Redness in the eyes
  • Scratches or abrasions on the eye
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Severe eye pain or prolonged discomfort
  • Styes on the eyelids
  • Sudden onset of flashes and floaters
  • Swift and unexpected vision changes
  • Swelling or bruising around the eye
  • Unusual eye discharge

Do’s and Don’ts During an Eye Emergency

Do’s

  1. Seek immediate medical attention. Don’t delay treatment, as prompt action can help save your vision.
  2. If you have an object stuck in your eye, cover your eye with a clean cloth or shield to protect it.
  3. Remove your contact lenses immediately if you have an eye injury or infection.
  4. If you have gotten chemicals or other harmful substances in your eyes, immediately flush them with clean water for at least 15 minutes.

Don’ts

  1. Even seemingly minor eye problems can escalate quickly. If you experience any sudden or significant changes in your vision, don’t ignore them.
  2. Do not use eye drops, ointments, or medications without consulting your eye doctor first.
  3. Do not drive or operate machinery if you are experiencing vision problems.
  4. If you have an object stuck in your eye, do not attempt to remove it yourself.
  5. Avoid rubbing, scratching, or applying pressure to your eyes.

Emergency eye care may constitute any of the following: 1. vision loss; 2. different size pupils; 3. double vision; 4. bleeding from the eye; 5. Swelling; 6. eye pain that doesn't lessen on its own; and/ or 7. eye pain accompanied by a headache. If you experience any of the following issues above, we recommend that you seek immediate medical attention.
